The quays, still with traditional paving and lined with old balconied houses, roofed in lauzes (stone slabs) retain the look of another age. The river sides offer visitors beautiful walks, a chance to absorb the history of the town and somewhere to sit and watch the river and the many activities which take place there.
There are several excellent restaurants in Argentat as well as the more relaxed atmosphere of the local cafe’s and bars.
Many shows and exhibitions take place during the summer, which contributes to the attractiveness and dynamism of the town.

Argentat has a market every Thursday during July and August and every 1st and 3rd Thursday throughout the rest of the year.
The market offers a huge variety of local produce and regional specialties. It is a fantastic way to spend a morning and and great way to meet the ‘paysans’.
There is also a night market in Monceaux-sur-Dordogne (5 minutes from Argentat) every Thursday night in the summer. You can buy your produce and have it cooked for you there and then!

Argentat is approximately 15 km from Goulles and is the capital of its canton in the Correze. It spreads out between high hillsides, once covered with vineyards, and a wide plain through which the Dordogne flows. It is this topology which gave the name “Argentat”,- “River passage”, and which made it an important crossing point between the Auvergne and the downstream lowlands.
